Illegal electricity connections impact Sarasvati Primary school

For the past five months, Sarasvati Primary School in Frasers has been grappling with a significant problem – illegal electricity connections that leave the school without electricity and water.

This causes a series of challenges, including blocked toilets and soaring expenses on generator fuel and gas.

The school primarily relies on a borehole for water, but without electricity it is unusable.

According to community members, the trouble began when a transformer blew because of illegal connections, and Eskom has yet to address the issue.

“They would fix it and remove the illegal connections, but a few months later it would explode again, so Eskom said the community must deal with the illegal connections first. Unfortunately, the school is badly affected,” said a source who prefers to remain anonymous.

Chairperson of the school’s governing body, Senzo Masikane, acknowledged the grim reality facing the school.

“We currently have no electricity, and we simply cannot afford to pay Eskom to install a transformer dedicated solely to the school,” he said..

The financial burden is staggering, with Eskom quoting a hefty R84 000 for the installation of a transformer – which the school cannot afford.
