Potjie battle boosts funds for Ballito Neighbourhood Watch

When the music got pumping, so too did a couple of the competitors who broke out in a jive.

Forty-nine teams turned the third annual Ballito Neighbourhood Watch (BNW) potjie competition into a magnificent culinary feast on Saturday.

‘The Green Machine’ team – Jonathan Moodley, Desmond Moodley, Charlotte Perumal, Revin Mizen, Purcell Chetty, Bheko Khonjwayo and Mduduzi Ndlovu  scrum around their lamb curry potjie.

The brew masters assembled at Townsend Park to cook up a storm in support of the organisation’s fundraising drive.

While the amount raised must still be tallied, BNW chairperson Morné Steffens said the turnout was exceptional.

The Vered Properties team of Melissa Bhima, Yvonne Meyer, Sue Naidoo, Deidre Aveyard and Tracey Middleton created a mutton bunny chow pot.

“We had the most stands ever, and by far the best earnings for sure out of the past three years,” he said.

Cooking up a storm were the Industrial Hardware and Engineering team Liam, Purelle, Chezray and Siva Pillay.

Funds will go towards a number of projects, including cameras BNW intends to install in the Ballito area. Existing cameras will also be upgraded.

“The committee would like to thank all of the competitors, volunteers, our incredible sponsors as well as all the locals who came out to support us.”

Having a blast – Karen Holdstock, Philup Jansen Jnr, Erin Holdstock, Helene Jansen and Philup Jansen of RHA Maintenance and Cleaning.

“Special thanks also go to our amazing event committee for their hard work and dedication, without whom this event would not have been possible,” said Steffens.

The Harcourts Ballito team cooked up a delicious oxtail potjie.

Team Halloween, made up of Umhlali Saps and the Rise Up Movement, were captain Vinny Pillay, Kantha Singh, Sithokozile Khoza, warrant officer Shaleen Ramlakan, Karla Walsh, Josha Daniel and (kneeling) captain Mahen Singh with their two potjies – one trotters and veg, the other lamb.
