Etete car fanatic styles his “harlequin” car low and loud
Runesh Mahabeer just wants to set his car apart from ordinary vehicles on the road, and enjoys giving fellow motorists a visual spectacle by lowering his car when navigating corners.
Etete car fanatic Runesh Mahabeer certainly stands out when he hits the road.
For him, his harlequin motif is no laughing matter, having spent R55 000 to ensure his 1.4 Polo Vivo attracts attention.
Acknowledging the expensive nature of souped up cars, Mahabeer didn’t skimp and gave his car the works.
The 36-year-old’s passion for modifying cars saw him investing R27 000 on air suspension, R13 000 on a booming sound system, and R15 000 on the distinctive and colourful harlequin car wrap.
The car show organiser said his car had not been modified for competitions though.
He just wanted to set it apart from ordinary vehicles on the road, and enjoys giving fellow motorists a visual spectacle by lowering his car when navigating corners.
Driving a lowered car isn’t just a choice, he said, but rather a safer and more enjoyable experience.
Mahabeer said his car was his “best friend”. Even when he feels unwell, he takes a drive as it gives him comfort and helps him clear his head.
Passionate about modifying cars since his school days, he started a car club, Kzndubs club, and has been hosting car shows and sound-off competitions for the past nine years and is always planning the next one.
Last year’s event in November attracted more than 200 North Coast and Durban car enthusiasts.
After completing matric, his love for modified vehicles grew even greater when he began work as a mechanic assistant in Shakaskraal.
Despite not owning a car himself at the time, he nevertheless organised a successful car show that attracted hundreds of modified cars to KwaDukuza.
“We have different categories. Some people have cars that may not be driven on public roads, which they only bring out for competitions. Then there are people like me who have modified cars which meet the legal requirements because we commute with them daily,” said Mahabeer.
