#Letter: Public apathy threatens democracy

The choice must be strategic, not emotional.

Ballito resident Walter Schotter writes:

It’s disheartening to witness the lack of public engagement leading up to the crucial election on May 29.

Despite numerous complaints, the absence of attendance at public meetings remains deeply ingrained in our community, undermining the efforts of our councillors who are unfairly dismissed by the ruling party, as the impression given is that they do not speak on behalf of the community.

We face a critical decision: whether to accept a potentially disastrous government led by the ANC, MK and EFF, or to embrace an alternative anchored by the strong presence of the DA, offering hope for a new dawn in our country.

The choice must be strategic, not emotional.

The DA has a proven track record over the past 30 years, consistently demonstrating progress wherever they govern. Just a stone’s throw away in the Midlands, the Umgeni Municipality, under a DA-led administration, has achieved remarkable turnaround in just two years.

Imagine the possibilities for our country and province over the next five years with them leading the way.

It’s concerning to see parties aligned with the Multi-Party Charter campaigning against the DA, diverting focus from larger issues such as the current status quo, namely the possibility of an alliance between the ANC, MK and EFF.

They should concentrate on campaigning against those parties. Their actions lead to diluting the vote, weakening the prospect of effective governance, as small parties may hold larger ones hostage for their demands.

In KZN, the choice boils down to the DA or IFP, both strong enough to secure a majority without depending on other parties. Cooperation between them, as seen in some municipalities, is key.

Every vote counts; Umgeni was decided by a mere 42 votes. Let’s prioritise civic duty over leisure activities and rally for a better future by casting our votes and encouraging others to do the same.
