Ballito runners support Bloom Special Needs School

Runners had the option of a 5, 10 or 21km course.

Almost 200 runners tackled early morning heat for a good cause on Saturday, raising funds for Bloom Special Needs School.

Taking off from the Dolphin Coast Striders clubhouse, runners had the option of a 5, 10 or 21km course, heading north towards Sheffield and back.

The runners knew their efforts were well worth it and spirits were high throughout the morning.

“This is just our second fundraising run and the support we have seen from the community has been amazing,” said Bloom founder, Nicola Stirton.

“This year is Bloom’s tenth year anniversary and it is fantastic to see so many people who have been involved over the years, and new faces too.”

Aside from the entry fees, Bloom was also raising funds from their popular merchandise table, including socks, caps and their new running shorts.

Bronwyn and Benjamin Reed (7) enjoyed the morning run. Benjamin was the fastest junior finisher in the 5km run.

All merchandise can be bought directly from the school, as can a variety of other products which have been introduced to help the older pupils learn functional life skills.

“On Tuesdays we sell flowers for R50, on Wednesdays there’s bread for between R30 and R45 and on Thursdays we offer herb and lettuce packs for R45,” said Nicola.

Graham Wood enjoys a morning run with the Morgan family – Jake and twins Madison and Brooklyn.

“The shop helps the kids to integrate into the community and learn business skills, money management and gives them responsibilities.”

Bloom currently has 48 pupils from age two to 21 and the school’s long-term goal is to move onto a campus where they could offer housing and future employment.

René van den Heever was all smiles at the finish line.

Nicola thanked Araujo Attorneys, Local Real Estate and the Dolphin Coast Striders for the sponsorship and support on Saturday.
