Senior lifeguard Sipho Mchunu on protecting KwaDukuza shores for over 20 years

Now stationed at Thompson's Bay, Mchunu has patrolled seven beaches along the coast during his career.

For senior lifeguard Mchunu, no rip current has ever been too daunting. Since his first training session as a high schooler in 1999, he has dedicated his life to saving others.

Now stationed at Thompson’s Bay, Mchunu has patrolled seven beaches along the coast during his career.

“All our beaches are the best,” he says, unable to pick a favourite.

Mchunu began his career with Lifeguard Africa in 2002 and joined KwaDukuza’s lifeguard team in 2012. Mentored by Brandon and Quentin Power of the National Sea Rescue Institute, he credits their guidance for shaping his approach to the job.

Originally from Groutville and now living in Etete, Mchunu remains deeply connected to his community. His daily duties include ensuring beach safety, rescuing swimmers, and providing first aid when needed.

Mchunu’s “office” – Thompson’s Bay.

“We call for medical assistance if necessary, but lifeguards are often the first responders,” he explains.

While he struggles to recall a single most memorable rescue, one dramatic event stands out: saving a swimmer caught in dangerous rip currents at Zinkwazi Beach. Despite the treacherous, rocky waters, Mchunu and his team managed to bring the man to safety.

Despite continuous warnings, Mchunu notes that many beachgoers continue to ignore safety advice. Nevertheless, he and his team remain vigilant, ready to intervene at a moment’s notice. As a senior lifeguard, Mchunu also mentors his team and encourages community members to learn swimming skills.

“If you need lessons, come to the beach – lifeguards are willing to teach you,” he says.

With over two decades of experience, Mchunu is steadfast in his mission to prevent drownings and ensure beachgoers enjoy the ocean safely.

“It’s not just a job – it’s about protecting lives.”

In KwaDukuza there are seven lifeguard protected beaches: Clarké Bay, Willard Beach, Thompson’s Bay, Salt Rock Main Beach, Tinley Manor, Blythedale Beach and Zinkwazi. During high season lifeguards are on duty from 6am to 6pm.
