Geetha’s homemade curries are Tongaat’s hidden gem
From humble beginnings to a thriving eatery, Geetha Sobaram’s passion and perseverance bring warmth, flavour and community. together with every dish.
Tucked away behind the Tongaat Police Station, is a hidden gem where warmth, culinary flavours and passion all come together at Geetha’s Homemade Curries.
The heart and soul of this beloved eatery is Geetha Sobaram, a 52-year-old foodie enthusiast with a smile as big as her love for cooking.
Geetha’s journey to owning her dream takeaway began in her childhood in Stanger, where she discovered how to make magic in the kitchen. Her passion blossomed in high school while working at a fast-food takeaway with Mrs Naicker in the late 1980s, sparking a lifelong dream of running her own business.

However, life didn’t hand her the keys to success overnight. Geetha first worked numerous jobs in Tongaat and Cape Town, saving diligently to bring her vision to life. After years of scrimping to get by, her perseverance paid off, and eight years ago Geetha’s Homemade Curries was born.
Her day begins at 5.30am, with the kitchen already bustling by 7.30am. With the help of her three employees, she cooks until 11.30am, just in time to meet the lunchtime rush. Known for her mouthwatering bunny chows and irresistible chicken or mutton biryanis, Geetha’s curries sell like hotcakes.
But it’s not just about the food; her heart goes into every dish.
As a mother of two and a business owner, Geetha has learned the importance of resilience.

“You need the heart of a lion,” she says. “Stay focused on your goal and don’t give up, even if things don’t go your way. Learn from your experiences and start again. Most importantly, love what you do, put your heart into it.”
Today, Geetha’s business is not only thriving but evolving. Her daughter has taken on the role of managing the shop, while Geetha embraces her role as head chef.
At Geetha’s Homemade Curries, it’s not just about a meal, it’s about a community experience, one made with love, perseverance, and a plenty of spice.
