Your health doesn’t take a holiday: Stick to your chronic medication routine
Plan ahead to ensure you have enough medication to last your trip.

As the holiday season begins, many are preparing for relaxation, travel, and a break from routine.
However, it’s important to stay mindful of your health, especially if you rely on chronic medication. Even a brief lapse in taking prescribed medications can lead to complications.
Pharmacist Sameera Kumandan from Medipost Pharmacy emphasised the importance of adhering to your medication schedule.

“The risks are real and serious. It is crucial to maintain your medication schedule to keep your health stable all year round. Skipping medication can result in withdrawal effects such as agitation, migraines or restlessness.
“Medications that affect the brain and central nervous system, such as antidepressants and opioids, are especially important” said Kumandan.
Chronic conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes or epilepsy require consistent medication to prevent complications such strokes, seizures or organ damage.
“Stopping heart medication abruptly can lead to heart attacks or dangerously high blood pressure. Skipping diabetes medication may result in high blood glucose levels, increasing the risk of diabetic coma or ketoacidosis. Missed doses can trigger seizures in epilepsy patients. Discontinuing psychiatric medications such as antidepressants without medical guidance can lead to withdrawal symptoms that disrupt emotional stability and overall health,” she said.
To stay on track with your medication during the holidays, Kumandan advised that you plan ahead to ensure you have enough supply to last your trip.
Consult your doctor for possible dosage or timing adjustments to address side effects or other concerns.
Pill organisers, reminders or medication management apps can help you stay consistent. Speak with your healthcare provider or pharmacist for personalised advice.
