iLembe ranks among KZN’s top six with 89.5% pass rate

The 2024 matriculating class broke a series of records countrwide.

iLembe’s matric pass rate of 89.5% was the tied fifth highest in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) and twelfth highest countrywide.

This was an improvement of almost a full percentage point from last year and comfortably ahead of the 76% and 84% of the Covid-19 affected previous two years.

Twenty-four schools in iLembe achieved a 100% pass rate this year, including Qinisani High School (Upper Tongaat), ML Sultan (KwaDukuza), Theo Hlalanathi Secondary School (Maphumulo), Khanyisa Secondary School (Ndwedwe), Lethithemba Secondary School (inland of KwaDukuza) and Jonase Secondary School (Maphumulo).

The results were celebrated by iLembe District Municipality mayor, Thobani Shandu.

“Thanks to the dedicated educators, supportive parents, and the entire community for their unwavering commitment to student success,” he said.

“Together, they have shown that with determination and hard work, greatness can be achieved.

“Let’s continue striving for excellence and aim for even greater achievements in the future!”

The positive movement in iLembe was mirrored countrywide, where this year’s matriculating class broke a series of records.

Over 87% of the 705 291 pupils who sat for the NSC examinations passed, far exceeding the previous record number of around 82.9%.

The bachelor’s pass rate (pupils who can go on to study at university) also improved countrywide to 47.8%.

The Free State was the best performing province, followed by KZN and Gauteng.
