Beloved Salt Rock librarian’s final chapter – a storied career comes to a close

"My hope is that the library continues to be a vibrant hub of learning and connection" - Lordon Buck.

For nearly three decades, Lordon Buck has been more than just the librarian at Salt Rock Library – she’s been the living, breathing archive of the community’s history.

Joining the library at 37 in 1997, she quickly became the trusted guide to everything, from the latest book releases to the hidden gems of Salt Rock.

Now taking retirement at 65, Lordon has not only steered people to their next great read, she’s become a cherished fixture in the town, witnessing its evolution first hand while sharing her wealth of knowledge with everyone who walked through the library doors.

“It has been such as special and fulfilling journey,” she said. Buck moved to Ballito from Kimberley in 1989 with husband Francois and their young family. She was drawn to the library after her medical technology career took an unexpected pause.

What began as a six-month part-time job quickly became her lifelong passion. And when the provincial library services considered closing the library because of limited open hours, Buck refused to let it happen.

“Closing a library on my watch was definitely not an option,” she said.

She rallied community support and breathed new life into the space.

“This special place belongs to the community. My hope is that the library continues to be an integral part of Salt Rock – a vibrant hub of learning and connection.

“It’s been wonderful to see children who used the library grow up and now bring their own kids to enjoy it,” she reflected.

Through the years, Buck has helped countless readers find joy in works by authors such as JK Rowling and Lee Child.

“The first Harry Potter book was published in 1997 and it’s still hugely popular with our younger readers,” she said.

While Salt Rock has grown, Buck said it hasn’t developed as rapidly as Sheffield Beach or Ballito, retaining much of its small-town charm.

“The trees in front of the library have grown though, blocking the glorious sea view,” she remarked.

She has no plans to leave the North Coast, a place she has called home for so many years.
