Ballito couple hits a high note with 60 year commitment

Bill and Angela Herbst’s love story began in a Johannesburg church and is as strong today as it was then.

A mutual passion for music and God laid the foundation for 60 years of love and commitment.

Celebrating their diamond wedding anniversary last week, Ballito couple Bill and Angela Herbst reflected on the journey that began in 1960 during a church service.

“I was playing the organ when I noticed him walk through the church. The organ had mirrors, and I saw him from there,” recalled Angela.

Both loved performing arts, church activities and frequently shared the stage. Bill was a skilled trumpeter and Angela was a seasoned actor, singer, and comedian.

Their shared interests laid the foundation for their love story and they were married on January 16, 1965, in Johannesburg. At the time, Bill was 23, and Angela was 22.

“I told her I would take care of her for the rest of our lives,” recalled Bill with tears in his eyes.

“I believed him and he kept his promise,” said Angela. Bill, with a smile, added, “Now, you’re the one taking care of me.”

Now 82 and 83, the couple reflected on the key ingredients that have kept their marriage strong: communication, compassion, kindness, and consideration. Bill, a former flight engineer with South African Airways, retired in 2001. The couple then moved to the North Coast, where they have lived for 24 years.

They are parents to three adult children, daughter Tanya Munari (57), eldest son Gavin Herbst (55) and their late son Igor Herbst, who died at the age of 52. Losing Igor in July last year was one of the most difficult challenges they have faced.

“He was an airline captain and we were very proud of him. His passing left a big hole in our hearts,” said Angela.

They are also proud grandparents to four grandchildren.

The couple remain active members of All Souls Anglican Church, enjoying a peaceful life by the sea filled with music, reading, and time spent together.

“We enjoy classical choral music and have many CDs at home,” they said.
