KwaDukuza traditional singer Omesh Mohanpursad mixes disco chutney in newest single

Omesh is on a mission to preserve traditional Indian music and was awarded for his efforts at the recent South African Traditional Music Awards.

KwaDukuza’s Omesh Mohanpursad is passionate about keeping traditional Indian music in the mainstream.

The 52-year-old father of three has had a lifelong fascination with music since first becoming inspired by Bollywood productions as a boy. Growing up in a musical family, Omesh sought a career as a singer and has become one of KwaDukuza’s most consistent and popular acts.

“I specialise in the genres of eastern film, religious, folk, pop and fusion, with a particular focus on traditional Indian music,” he said.

Omesh is a popular performer at events in KwaDukuza.

“I grew up wanting to play as many instruments as I could and learnt the jazz drums, guitar, keyboard, harmonium and dholak (Indian drums).”

Since following a career in music full time, Omesh has released eight albums of original songs which have received airplay as far afield as Trinidad and Tobago.

After being nominated three years in a row, he also broke through with his first win in the 2024 South African Traditional Music Awards in the Best Indian Artist category.

Omesh Mohanpursad wants to preserve South African Indian traditional music.

“Just being nominated was a great experience for me as I was able to interact with like-minded South African artists, but I was blessed to win last year.”

“I would like to thank my wife Nerasha and children Natisha, Yashna and Naresh and all my family and friends for their love and support.”

Omesh’s latest song Disco Chutney has an accompanying music video shot in KwaDukuza which you can find on all of his social media channels, including YouTube.
