Long lines as residents race to update Sassa cards
The process to replace the gold card began in September 2024 for all 28 million Sassa beneficiaries.
South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) collection points along the North Coast are reporting the arrival of hundreds of people trying to update to the new cards.
Beneficiaries using the Sassa Gold Card must switch to the new Postbank Black Card by February 28, as the Gold Card will no longer function after this date.
According to Postbank spokesperson Bongani Diako, the Sassa Gold Card will be deactivated for all transactions, including cash withdrawals, balance enquiries, statement printing and retail purchases.
Why the switch?
The transition to Postbank Black Cards began in September 2024 for all 28 million Sassa beneficiaries. Postbank CEO Nikki Mbengashe emphasised the importance of making the switch before the deadline to avoid disruptions in accessing grant payments.
“All current Sassa Gold Cards will stop working on February 28, 2025, regardless of the expiry date printed on them,” said Mbengashe.
Beneficiaries are urged to visit their nearest Postbank site, located at major retailers such as Checkers, Shoprite, Pick n Pay, Usave, and Boxer, to obtain their new Black Card.
How to get the new Postbank Black Card
The new Postbank Black Card is issued free of charge to all Sassa beneficiaries. To receive the new card, beneficiaries must present a valid South African ID or a temporary ID. No card will be issued without these documents.
Where to collect the new card
Beneficiaries can collect their new cards at the same locations where they usually receive their grant payments, including:
- Shoprite
- Checkers
- Usave
- Boxer (nationwide)
- Pick n Pay (Gauteng only)
The Postbank Black Card is ready for immediate use at all ATMs, retail point-of-sale machines, and any location that accepts bank cards.
