Mandeni farmer hatches plan for success

Busi Msomi-Mthembu raises, packages and cooks chickens, controlling the process from start to finish.

Mandeni’s Busi Msomi-Mthembu (35) is fast becoming a household name, not just for her mouth-watering idombolo (steamed bread) and chicken dishes, but for her inspiring journey as a farmer and entrepreneur.

The poultry and crop farmer has built a thriving business, The Light of Messiah, selling live and plucked chickens, vegetables and home-cooked meals.

Her journey has not been easy. She recalls the early struggles of starting out, losing chickens to heavy rains and facing financial constraints that made building a secure shed nearly impossible.

A turning point came in 2023 when she completed a poultry course in KwaDukuza run by Ndumndai Pty (Ltd) that equipped her with the knowledge and skills to effectively manage her chickens.

Plucked chickens, packaged and ready for sale.

“That course set me up for success. From there, I have not looked back,” she said.

Today, the mother of two manages 60 chickens and is raising over 100 more in her chicken coop. While farming keeps her hands full, it is the kitchen that brings her business full circle.

“I started small – just a few chicks in a coop. Now I have regular customers who come to me for fresh chicken or cooked food,” she said.

Her business is a testament to hard work, resourcefulness and passion.

Busi raises chickens in a temperature controlled coop.

“Farming is not just for big landowners. If you are committed and love what you do, you can start anywhere – even in your backyard,” she said.

In addition to raising poultry, Msomi-Mthembu sources eggs to sell from local farmers with layer hens and continues to diversify her offerings.

She is steadily growing her customer base, relying largely on word-of-mouth and loyal, repeat customers.

Looking ahead, she dreams of expanding her operation, creating job opportunities for young people in her community and eventually opening a permanent food outlet.
