Vim and vigour at Farmer’s Market volleyball showdown

Tongaat's Liberté Volleyball Club ran a successful returning tournament.

Ballito served up more than fresh produce this weekend with its first mixed beach volleyball tournament spiking serious energy into the Farmer’s Market.

The tournament was co-hosted by Tongaat’s Liberté Volleyball Club and the Ballito Farmer’s Market, offering a vibrant sporting spectacle in glorious mid-winter sunshine.

Runner-up: Tongaat Raiders: Sachin Padayachee, Kimesha Naidoo, Mohammed Akhtar Hassan and Preegan Gungarajh.

Nine teams of four players, each required to field at least one female player, entered the pre-Father’s Day tournament. Teams travelled from as far as Pietermaritzburg and Port Shepstone, with local representation from Stanger, Ballito, Tongaat, Durban and Phoenix.

There was plenty of well-natured competition.

The tournament followed a round-robin format, with first-to-21 single-set matches. The semi-finals and final were contested over best-of-three sets.

In the final, South Coast beat the Tongaat Raiders in straight sets, 21-16 and 21-17, to be crowned the inaugural champions.

The weather was perfect for a day of intense but fun competition.

“The format created great interest among spectators, especially families, as it fostered a welcoming, inclusive atmosphere,” said Liberté chairperson Jayson Govender.

Ballito Farmers Market manager, Anni du Plessis, hailed the collaboration a success.

The skills on show highlighted the strength and depth of the sport in KZN.

“It was a fantastic atmosphere and great exposure for both the sport and the market. Many players and supporters had never visited before, so it helped connect local sport and entrepreneurship.”

The volleyball was high-octane with teams coming from across KZN.
