Lyric Lounge enjoys big comeback in new Ballito venue

The popular event host kicked off its new space with a big bingo and quiz night.

A lively bingo and quiz night launched the opening of the new Lyric Lounge Theatre last Thursday, marking a fresh chapter for the popular Ballito entertainment venue.

Previously located at Odyssey Mall, the theatre relocated to the Centre of Design in the Ballito business park. The new 208-seat venue boasts improved accessibility with both stairs and a lift, as well as ample secure parking.

Morné Lane was the night’s enthusiastic bingo chat-host.

Kicking off the celebration, 66 guests enjoyed dinner before diving into three lively rounds of 75-ball bingo. Generous cash prizes were up for grabs, with Robert Scorgie landing the first overall pot by calling B14, narrowly beating this reporter, who was one ball short. Yvonne Smith claimed the next round with N45 and Jane Nortje secured the final win with the same number.

The evening also included two 10-round quizzes that sparked laughter and debate, with some wild answers, including the idea that penguins are flying mammals and the Chinese invented spaghetti.

Robert Scorgie edged out The North Coast Courier to the R650-plus cash-prize.

Owner and event organiser Morné Lane said the night was a great start.

“We are lucky to have loyal supporters for our quiz and bingo nights,” he said. “But we are really building up to our big variety concert fundraiser on July 11.”

The one-night-only show will feature eight artists performing hits from the 1960s to today. Proceeds will help recoup a portion of the R1.5-million loss Lane and his partners suffered from their previous closure.

“The artists are donating their time to help us rebuild. This new space is lighter, more spacious and better suited to what we are trying to do,” said Lane.
