Community mourns murdered KDM employee, calls for justice

The memorial service of Nokulunga Mashabane was held in KwaDukuza last week.

Mourners packed KwaDukuza Town Hall last Thursday to honour Nokulunga Mashabane (31), who was found brutally murdered in her vehicle on June 27.

Hundreds of family members, colleagues and residents attended the memorial service where Mashabane, a KwaDukuza municipality employee, was described as a kind, dedicated public servant and a loving mother of three young children.

Her death has left many in disbelief, with questions around the circumstances of the killing still unanswered.

Friends described her as someone who often avoided driving alone at night.

“She did not feel safe and would ask someone to accompany her. Hearing that she went out alone that night is hard to believe,” said a friend.

“She was peaceful and kind. Why would anyone want to harm her?”

Mashabane held a pivotal role at the municipality, where she was known for mentoring interns and supporting young professionals. Acting mayor Ali Ngidi praised her professionalism and character.

“When I stepped into the office of the mayor, I selected a team and Nokulunga was among them. I have never regretted that decision. She carried out her duties with love, professionalism and care,” said Ngidi.

Ngidi called on law enforcement to expedite the investigation and bring the perpetrator to justice.

Speaking on behalf of the Mashabane family, Maphumulo mayor Matozi Khuzwayo-Dlamini thanked those who had offered support, especially the KwaDukuza municipality.
Mashabane was laid to rest on Saturday in her hometown of Maphumulo.
