Two killed, 19 injured in M4 crash near Umdloti

Three vehicles and a pedestrian were involved in the pile-up.

Two people were killed and 19 more injured in a three-car crash on the M4 highway near Umdloti this morning.

The accident happened between Umdloti and the La Mercy bridge shortly after 7.30am, with a Toyota Corolla, Hyundai i10 and Toyota Quantum taxi all involved.

According to Reaction Unit South Africa (Rusa) spokesperson, Prem Balram, the initial collision was believed to be between the Corolla travelling south and the i10 heading north, with the taxi caught in the aftermath.

“The driver of the Toyota Corolla was pronounced dead at the scene after being extricated from the wreckage,” said Balram.

“Multiple passengers from the Toyota Quantum suffered moderate injuries.”

Per Riza Sadack of IPSS Search and Rescue Tongaat, the other casualty from the accident was a male pedestrian who was on his way to work.

The road was briefly closed but has since been reopened.
