How B vitamins improve focus, energy and mood
Ahead of exam season, dietitian Claire McHugh breaks down the essential foods for focus.
Mental clarity, energy and focus start on your plate and the B vitamin family might be your best study partner this exam season.
When it comes to maintaining good health and sharp focus, few nutrients work as hard as the B vitamins. This family of eight essential nutrients keeps our bodies and minds performing at their best, especially during busy workdays or exam season.
Why Vitamin B Matters
The B vitamins help our bodies convert food into energy, support metabolism and promote healthy brain and nerve function.
These vitamins also play a key role in maintaining focus, memory and concentration – making them particularly important for students or anyone under mental pressure. Vitamins B6 and B12 help form neurotransmitters such as serotonin and dopamine, which influence mood and mental clarity. Folate (B9) supports brain development and reduces fatigue, helping you stay alert and focused when studying or working long hours.
A deficiency in B vitamins can lead to tiredness, poor concentration and low mood, all of which make learning and productivity harder.
Food sources of Vitamin B
Fortunately, most people can get enough B vitamins through a balanced diet. Whole grains like oats, brown rice and whole wheat bread are rich in thiamine and riboflavin, which help release energy from food.
Animal products, such as fish, poultry, eggs, meat and dairy, are excellent sources of vitamin B12, vital for brain health and energy. For those following a vegetarian or vegan diet, fortified cereals, plant-based milks and nutritional yeast can help meet daily needs.
Leafy greens (like spinach and kale), legumes (such as lentils and beans), nuts and seeds are also great sources of folate and other B vitamins that support memory and concentration.
Fuel for body and mind
Including a variety of these foods in your daily meals is a natural way to boost energy, mood and focus – ideal for exam preparation or a demanding schedule. By eating a diet rich in B vitamins, you are nourishing both body and brain for better health, balance and success.
By fuelling your body with these essential nutrients, you will be supporting your energy levels, brain health and overall well-being, one bite at a time.
