Obituary: Jennifer Hamlyn – A jewel of the community
A memorial will be held at Grace Church Ballito on Friday, 28 November at 10am.
Jennifer Guilda Hamlyn passed away peacefully at the age of 90 at her home on Langaford Sugar Estate on November 14 – poignantly, the birthday of her beloved late husband, Derrick Hamlyn.
Jenny (2 July 1935 – 14 November 2025) was surrounded by love, in the presence of her daughter Bronwyn Eb, with husband Paul and son Ryall Hamlyn, with wife Gina.
Now reunited in a heavenly embrace, Jenny and Derrick were affectionately known to friends as “Hurry and Scurry” – a fitting nickname for a couple who lived life at full speed, never missing an opportunity for fun and adventure. As long-standing members of the North Coast community, many will fondly remember their themed and fancy-dress parties, all delightfully orchestrated by Jenny.
Her family was especially grateful to celebrate her final birthday with her at Collisheen Estate in July, surrounded by her many friends and loved ones for one last joyful celebration.
Jenny had a remarkable gift for bringing people together. Known for her warm hospitality, she welcomed newcomers into the community with open arms, sharing expert floral arrangements, cooking tips or simply inviting them into her home. She was also a passionate and capable bridge player, continuing to play right up until her swift leukaemia diagnosis in late October.
A woman of great strength and resilience, Jenny overcame much in her early life and recovered from serious illness later on. Yet she remained vibrant and cheerful to the end, proudly applying her signature bright pink lipstick just a day before her passing.
She is deeply missed by many, especially her daughter Bronwyn, son Ryall, her brother Norman Ferguson and family, as well as her five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, with another little one on the way, a fact she was overjoyed about, as she dearly loved “my babies.”
Those left behind take comfort in knowing there is surely much hurrying and scurrying underway in heaven.
A memorial will be held at Grace Church Ballito on Friday, 28 November at 10am. Grant, Connor and Amanda Boonzaier.
