From bustling Ballito to tranquil Zinkwazi, the coastline offers something for every beachgoer.
The North Coast is one of South Africa’s most loved coastlines, offering stunning views and seven lifeguarded beaches between Ballito and Zinkwazi.
Four of these hold full Blue Flag status, meeting international standards for safety, environmental care and facilities.
Visitors are urged to swim only at the seven protected beaches listed below, from south to north:
Clarke Bay
Clarke Bay boasts a sheltered tidal pool perfect for children and relaxed swimming. With nearby cafés and restaurants, it’s ideal for a fun day out. It also offers a great photo opportunity at the famous yellow picture frame.

Willard Beach (Blue Flag)
The heart of Ballito’s beachfront, this Blue Flag beach lies at the northern end of the promenade, which winds south to Salmon Bay. Willard Beach is famous for hosting major surf events.

Thompson’s Bay (Blue Flag)
Home to the iconic ‘Hole in the Wall’ rock formation, Thompson’s Bay is popular for its scenic views, tidal pool and excellent snorkelling.

Salt Rock Main Beach (Blue Flag)
Salt Rock offers great surf, a wide sandy beach and vibrant energy. On-site food vendors and large tidal pools near the Salt Rock Hotel make it ideal for families.

Tinley Manor Beach
Tinley Manor is ideal for long walks and laid-back family gatherings. With nearby eateries and public braai areas, it’s perfect for relaxed beach days.

Blythedale Beach (Blue Flag)
Gentle waves and wide sands make Blythedale a family favourite. It is also the venue for the Blythedale Music Festival each year from December 27.

Zinkwazi Beach
Surrounded by a conservancy and set beside a picturesque lagoon, Zinkwazi is perfect for nature lovers. Over 250 bird species have been recorded here, making it a top pick for those seeking a quieter beach with natural charm.
