Brettenwood author Maureen Campbell releases second historical novel

‘Under the Banyan Tree’ charts love and loss in Durban in the 1940s.

Brettenwood author Maureen Campbell has returned to historical fiction for her second novel, Under the Banyan Tree – a decades-spanning story of love and loss.

The book follows Jemimah, a young Indian woman with big dreams, who is forced to move to a sugar plantation in Empangeni following the Durban riots in the 1940s. There, she begins her life anew, finding solace under the shade of the titular banyan tree.

“I loved writing the book. A lot of it is rooted in real historical events and I really enjoyed that research aspect,” said Maureen, who published her first novel, African Dawn, in 2023.

“The second one was definitely easier to write. I felt that I found my way more quickly and it was much more free-flowing, knowing what was required.”

Like her first novel, Under the Banyan Tree was published by Harvard Ink, an independent publisher based in Durban.

“We have a great relationship, and I have enjoyed the process with them on both occasions,” said Maureen.

With two novels now under her belt, Maureen is already working on her next chapter. While remaining coy about the details, she hinted that a new project is underway.

“Outside of long-form writing, I also really enjoy writing poetry and short stories, so I might combine that into a collection at some point.”

Under the Banyan Tree is available in paperback and digital format via Amazon, retailing at just under R250 at the time of print.
