Music has a way of transporting us through time and space, lifting our mood, stirring memories and bringing people together. It was this shared love of music that gave birth to the Groutville Jazz and Soul Club.

The idea began in 2020 with Ntokozo Mcineka, Sandile Nqaba, Sfiso Fakazi (who plays guitar in Fax Band), Nathi Nyongo, Parker Mzoneli and Zakhele Gumede meeting informally. Inspired by Sunday afternoons listening to jazz on the radio, they wanted to grow appreciation for the genre.

The club was officially formed in 2023.

Once a month, members gather on a Sunday for a listening session, with members given the opportunity to share their music selection. The club does not yet have a permanent home, so sessions are held at committee members’ homes or the Luthuli Museum.

The club has grown significantly since its early beginnings, with more than 70 active members.

Annual events such as the ‘After the Walk Jazz Session’, hosted in collaboration with the Luthuli Museum, have become highlights on the calendar. The event features an afternoon of jazz, with performances by local DJs, artists and Sfiso Fakazi’s Fax Band.

Club secretary Nokuthula Ndhlovu said her love of jazz and soul began at home and grew through listening to radio legends.

“We grew up listening to R&B, jazz and fusion, the likes of Eddie Zondi, Mandla Mdletshe and Treasure Tshabalala on the radio,” she said.

Growing up in a musical household deepened that connection.

“Jazz for me means finding people who understand me and speak my language, the language of music.”
