Umhlali Country Club celebrated its past while setting its sights on the future during a special golf day last Wednesday.

The Celebrity Challenge brought together members, sponsors and sporting personalities before guests gathered at the clubhouse for the unveiling of the club’s new logo. Addressing guests, chairman Alvin Els said the club’s roots stretched back to 1961, when local sugarcane farmers decided to build themselves a golf course.

“Umhlali Country Club carries a proud heritage, being built the year South Africa became an independent republic,” he said.

Els said the farmers cleared land among the monkey orange trees and built the course themselves. Tennis courts were established that same year, followed later by a bowls green and squash courts.

“For decades, Umhlali was the family hub of the North Coast. Generations learned their game here. Saturdays happened here. It was the place where you knew people, and people knew you,” said Els.

He said the club was entering its next chapter while remaining rooted in its history and community. Plans include course upgrades, staff training, improvements to the pro shop, driving range and academy, a catering review and investment in solar power.

The club also wants to attract younger members and strengthen its partnerships with sponsors.

The Celebrity Challenge will take place every three months and will be linked to fundraising for community causes.

“As we cut the ribbon and unveil our new image, we honour our past and embrace our future. Together, we will ensure Umhlali remains the place where the North Coast comes together,” he said.
