Tongaat Protec students fly high again

Mzobe, a pupil at the Sacred Heart Secondary School in Verulam, praised Protec for their invaluable support, saying she would not have received eight distinctions without their help.

It was all joy and jubilation at Protec Tongaat last Wednesday as pupils celebrated their 100% matric pass rate.

Thirty-one of the 32 matric pupils enrolled in the programme obtained a bachelor pass, with six distinctions in maths, eight in physics, 12 in English and 25 for life orientation between them.

Kimika Ramdav and Tracey Nyongwane obtained six distinctions each and the top student, Nomzamo Mzobe (centre) got eight.

Top student Nomzamo Mzobe bagged eight distinctions and Luyanda Msomi, Buyisile Nyongwana and Kimika Ramdav all scored six distinctions. Cebolenkosi Zulu recieved five distinctions.

“I strongly believe that time management was the key thing that helped me to do well and also paying attention in class and ensuring that if I do not understand something, I would speak up,” said Mzobe.

Mzobe wants to study medicine at Wits University and hopes to become a neurosurgeon. But she will need a bursary to make this happen.

Protec is a career enrichment programme promoting maths, science and technological literacy for pupils in grade 10, 11 and 12. They work with mostly pupils from poor communities.

Protec Tongaat branch manager, Marion Takis praised the pupils for their hard work and wished them the best of luck going forward.

“As a non-profit organisation we fully depend on donations, so we are extremely grateful to our financial partners for enabling us to make a difference to these young people,” said Takis.
