Crawford International North Coast pupil Matthew Scholtz has cooked up top honours in the 2020 Taste Bud Battle after devouring first place in South Africa’s premier kids and teens cooking and baking competition.
With the final cook-off held recently at the Capsicum Culinary Studio in Rosebank, Johannesburg, 40 finalists from around the country battled it out in the final mystery box challenge.

From their respective age categories, broken up into four, Matthew outshined the competition.
Being his second year entering the competition, 10-year-old Matthew this year made it through to the finals where he went on to win his category.
Matthew not only walks away with the title of Taste Bud Battle Junior Primary Chef of the Year, but also a Menlyn shopping centre hamper, including a series of shopping
vouchers which includes one for R5 000 at Hirsch’s Homestore – a cash prize of R10 000 does sweeten up the deal a bit more too!
“We are thrilled for Matthew because this is an example of determination and perseverance at its best,” said Donna Verrydt, Taste Bud Battle director.
“For a child to not even make the finals last year, but to take all the lessons he learned on-board and to come back with a fighting spirit and win – well this is a life lesson beyond the kitchen and we are so proud of him!”
