Fish and chips is one of those dishes that should be done well or not at all, there is no real middle ground as far as I’m concerned. There is nothing worse than average fish and chips.
I am glad to say that Ocean Queen at The Quarter is definitely serving top quality fish and chips plus a selection of fine seafood items.
Ocean Queen is more than just a takeaway. They offer a fine selection of fresh and frozen seafood at extremely competitive prices. On walking in I could not help but notice the stunning array of fresh fish on sale which included Geelbek, Cave bass (lantern fish), selection of rock cod, yellow fin tuna and reds.
The menu is so well priced, it’s a real bang for your buck lunch. I ordered a fish and chips, crumbed calamari and a grilled fish of the day. There is seating available, so you can enjoy your meal there but its generally a takeaway.
The calamari was very crisp and well seasoned and the chips were more of your ‘slap chip’ variety, which was fine by me. The hake was very moist, although the batter was a bit soft but that’s more from being in a container than anything else. The fish of the day was a red fish (slinger). It was a real winner. I have never had this fish before as I have always been told it’s quite bony but I didn’t find this to be the case. I chose to have mine whole with head on, as I believe that there is a lot more flavour when its cooked whole. But you can also order it filleted.
My only criticism really is that I think the tartar sauce could use a bit more flavour as it was lacking in the capers and gherkins  department. Besides that it really great meal! With such a great variety it really is worth a visit.
