I had been looking forward to this lunch for some time. My appetite had been wetted by the numerous rave reviews I had received from friends. Fego is conveniently located at the Tiffany’s Centre in Umhali, which means there is plenty of parking. The décor is beautifully stylish and lends itself to outside dining, which is perfect with our wonderful coastal weather.
The menu is well laid out, with more than enough selection to please everyone, including fresh muffins and croissants and a wide selection of cakes, sandwiches and pizza.
When you walk in the door the heavenly smell of coffee immediately gets your taste buds tingling. My coffee was well brewed and went down easily. But I digress, let me return to the main meal.
My wife and I had the super club sandwich and the smoked salmon salad. The club sandwich was phenomenal! It was well presented with plenty of topping and all in all very generous portion. This was great value for money.
Sadly the salad left something to be desired. It was monstrous, a portion large enough for two people but consisted mainly of iceberg lettuce. For R77 I would have liked to have seen some rocket, baby spinach or some rosa frilly lettuce at least. The waitress forgot to bring the lemonnaise dressing and when I asked for it we got what seemed to be a honey mustard type dressing. I don’t understand how two dishes can be so far apart. I have had their chicken and halloumi salad before and that was a real treat. So I am hoping they were having an off day when we were there.
The service also left a little to be desired – they could definitely sharpen it up a bit. I do intend to go back so that I can make my mind up about them. I always say you can’t judge a place on one meal alone, so I will give them a deserved second chance.
