For something different for this week’s review I decided to highlight some of the true local food masters we have on the Dolphin Coast. They are making some phenomenal food but not in the traditional restaurant style.
First there is Barry Korb of the Artisan Baker in Salt Rock. I had my reservations when I saw Barry opening up shop in Salt Rock but I can honestly say he is doing an amazing job of bringing artisan breads to our community. The selection of breads he has on offer is staggering and the amount of time he puts into what he does shows how dedicated he is to his craft. On most days he starts at 11pm at night working right through to the morning. I would recommend getting there early as he sells out so fast. I tried the basil and sundried tomato loaf, rosemary and olive loaf, croissants and his cheeses. They were all delicious.
Then I visited Hannes Poppmeier of Deli News, in Gregory Park. He is producing the most amazing cold meats and home-made meals. My favorite aspect of Hannes’s meats is that you are assured of quality with no ‘fillers’ unlike a lot of the commercially made meats. He only uses the best available ingredients. I tasted a wonderful selection of salamis, hams and cheeses, all of them blowing the socks off the regular store bought products. The real highlight was his beef pie. Absolutely outstanding! The pie only costs R65 and is enough to feed a family of four. You can buy it frozen or order it baked so you can just pick it up on the way home after work.
Both of these talented men count their experience in decades and not years which for me makes them true masters of their crafts.
Liquor of the week
It is trendy these days to infuse all kinds of flavours into traditional spirits like vodka. The Boss range of flavoured vodkas is following this trend. I sampled the caramel version and found it surprisingly smooth. They have toned down on the harsh Vodka taste and replaced it with beautiful notes of Carmel. I would serve it ice cold or even add it to a chocolate sauce over ice cream or even drizzled over some french toast, yummie!
