On the road – 23 October 2015

Running your first marathon is an achievement you can be proud of.

It is estimated that on average a runner will take 46 000 steps during a marathon.

For a novice marathon runner these steps are into unknown territory. I remember lining up for my first marathon and thinking to myself “am I going to be able to finish”?

This weekend two Dolphin novice marathon runners answered that question for themselves and completed the Goss and Balfe Sapphire Coast marathon.

Special congratulations to Tracey Quin (4:05) and Kirsty Turco (4:10) who both successfully completed their first (46 000 steps) marathon.

My husband always says never underestimate the power of a woman, especially one that runs 42kms for fun. Well done ladies you are now marathon runners!

This race is rather unique experience for runners and includes a free train ride from Amanzimtoti station, stopping halfway at Ifracombe, just before Umkomaas, to drop off the 21km participants.

It then continues to Scottburgh for the start of the marathon. The route winds along next to the beautiful Indian Ocean and finishes at Hutchison Park in Amanzimtoti.

Well done to all the Dolphins who took part and ran some awesome times. Here are some of the highlights – Petros 2:54, Isaac 3:04, Siboniso 3:31,Phil 3:38 (PB), Leigh 3:54 (8th lady overall).

Morning runs (Tuesday – Saturday) take place from the Salt Rock Country Club at 5am. Remember next week is braai night straight after the time trial with live music. Everyone is invited.
