Seven hundred years before Jesus was born, the Prophet Isaiah predicted the coming of the Messiah, Jesus. He described Him as: “Wonderful” a personality that evokes a sense of wonder. Isaiah 9:6 (NKJV) … His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
What’s so “wonderful” about Him? Have you ever had a sense of wonder? Have you ever seen, felt or heard something that took your breath away? Perhaps it was the first time you held your new-born baby; or the time you climbed a mountain peak; or stood at the foot of a mighty waterfall; or seen a mighty mountain range in the Drakensberg, the Himalayas, the Rockies, or the Alps? Or heard Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony, or the laughter of your grandchildren at play.
There are millions of wonderful things in life that can take your breath away. But the greatest of all is Jesus! He is the ultimate wonder of wonders! You may be thinking, Jesus? Wonderful? Get out of here! I’ve seen the nativity scenes; I’ve heard the Sunday School stories. He’s meek and mild and boring.
But as Dorothy Sayers writes: “The people responsible for the crucifixion of Jesus never accused him of being a bore-on the contrary: they thought him too dynamic to be safe. It has been left for later generations to muffle up that shattering personality and surround him with an atmosphere of tedium. We have efficiently pared the claws of the Lion of Judah, certified him “meek and mild” and recommended him as a fitting household pet for pale curates and pious old ladies.”
