#Reportback: Repairs ruined by carelessness

Councillor Ayabonga Zwane asks residents to play their part in protecting infrastructure.

Over the past few weeks, the KwaDukuza Municipality has made significant progress in repairing and installing new stormwater drain covers across Ward 6.

These upgrades were long overdue, and are vital for improving drainage, preventing flooding, and keeping our streets safe for motorists and pedestrians.

However, there have been several of these stormwater covers that have been damaged shortly after completion. This dilutes the municipality’s efforts to improve local infrastructure and it also poses serious safety hazards for our community.

Open or broken stormwater drains can cause severe accidents for motorists and pedestrians, especially at night or during heavy rain. Additionally, flooding and road damage will be expected, as the drainage system becomes obstructed.

As the local ward councillor I want to urge all residents and road users to refrain from driving over stormwater covers unnecessarily, specifically heavy vehicles.

The community is reminded to report any missing or damaged covers to the KwaDukuza municipality’s civil business unit or to myself.

I want to further encourage our community to start taking an active role in protecting our infrastructure. This collaborative effort can only make our community better.
