5 meetup groups for the North Coast

Meetup.com is a service used to organise online groups that then meet in real life at various events.

Meetup.com is slowly becoming one of the best ways to meet people in your local community.

It’s an easy way of finding people with similar interests, such as cooking, art, films, or exercise.

How does it work?

Meetup is a service used to organise online groups that then meet in real life at various events.

Anyone can start a group, and some Dolphin Coast residents have taken it upon themselves to do just that.

Here are some active local meetups that you might consider joining:

Dolphin Coast Book and Film Club – with 409 members, this meetup revolves around fascinating readings and thought-provoking films. Organised by Clint Le Bruyns, one of their regular meetups is Thursday Reading Spaces, where members get together for some individual reading or writing at Starbucks in Gateway.

Dolphin Coast Writing Circle – another group put together by Clint Le Bruyns, this one is for both published authors and emerging or aspiring writers, with writing circle meetups held at least once a month. Overlapping slightly with the Dolphin Coast Book and Film Club, members also meet at Starbucks Gateway every Thursday for some writing and discussion.

Dolphin Coast Arts & Culture Interest Group – organised by Julie Davies, this group meets for “varying activities that stimulate discussion and encourage engagement”. Members are free to propose movies, musicals, museums, outings or guest speakers. Each meeting usually has about 10-30 attendees, said Davies.

Faith@Work Community – Clint Le Bruyns also organises this meetup, which is an initiative of the Theology and Development Programme at the University of KwaZulu-Natal. This group also meets at Starbucks Gateway on Thursday evenings.

Crafting Female Friendships in Durban – with 605 members, this group is for girls only, and functions as a means for women to network with other women in the Durban area. Some upcoming meetups include a pool party in Umdloti, a Halloween party, and lunch at Foodbox in Morningside.
