In many circles the North Coast is regarded as the home of volleyball in South Africa.
The Verulam and Districts Volleyball Association (VDVA) has over the years developed into a core member of the region and helped grow the game among both junior and senior players.
While the body is based in Verulam its structures have attracted teams from Phoenix, Newlands and Tongaat with clubs from these areas participating in its exciting indoor and outdoor league competitions.
This year the VDVA kicks off its 10th anniversary with an opening outdoor tournament which will be held at the Verulam Recreational Grounds on March 15.
VDVA president Lingum Pillay said VDVA has a host of celebratory tournaments planned for the year.
“As always we are focused on successful completion of both the indoor and outdoor leagues. As this is our tenth anniversary year, we aim to celebrate with a host of commemorative tournaments and associated functions paying tributes to the players and organisers over the years,” Pillay explained.
The opening tournament is a whole day affair and while the competition is fierce on the court the event embodies a carnival atmosphere on the sidelines.
Fans of the sport are urged to come and support locals clubs at the annual tourney.
