Boardriders finish year off strong
Shane Sykes and Jaco Kapp score one last podium finish for the year.
The North Coast Boardriders held their last event for the year, the Summer Surf pro, at Willard beach on Saturday, December 6.
The competitors were greeted with a perfect summer’s day with light winds and high quality waves. The good conditions ensured some spectacular surfing that delighted the capacity crowd on the beach.
All the top surfers from the North Coast were in attendance vying for the prestigious title as well as some spectacular prizes from Billabong and Dakine.
The U/20 final was made up of KZN`s ‘who’s who’ of junior surfing, pitting Shane Sykes, Richard Kidd and Braiden Coates against one another.
Shane used all his international experience to come out on top, relegating Richard Kidd to second, with Braiden Coates coming in third.
The men’ open division final was another close affair with some challenging conditions as the tide filled in. The lead kept changing hands with the surfers trying to position themselves for the high scoring waves and assert their dominance.
In the end Jaco Kapp managed to make it two in a row with another win. Ryan Balfour placed second with Byron Lindsay in third and Durban’s Mikhael Vawda finishing in fourth.
All competitors unanimously agreed that all entry fees raised will be donated to the North Coast Courier Orphan Fund.
The North Coast Boardriders Club will be back with more exciting events and initiatives in 2015.
Meanwhile Salt Rock’s Calvin Goor won the U14 boys title at the O’Neill Super Grom series this weekend at Durban’s North Beach.
He will be hoping to maintain this run of good results going into this weekend’s Lizzard Summer Surf competition.
