Local surfers off to national selection camp

North Coast surfers joining fellow junior surfing squad members in bid to secure a spot in the national team.

The South African junior surfing squad, including five surfers from the North Coast, will be on the South Coast in Uvongo this weekend participating in a national selection camp.

Shane Sykes, Richard Kidd, Bevan Willis, Sophie Bell and Jade Mets will be at the camp alongside their fellow provincial and national surfers.

Robin de Kock from Surfing South Africa (SSA) said the 27 surfers will be assessed by the national coaches.

A team of four U18 and four U16 boys, and two U18 and two U16 girls will be selected.

De Kock said the selectors will also name non-travelling reserves in each of the divisions.

“Once the team has been ratified by the SSA board an application for National Colours and approval to compete in the ISA World Junior Championships will be made to the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC),” he said.

After receiving national colours, the team will participate in a number of training camps and domestic competitions until they leave for the World Champs, which is provisionally scheduled for California in October.

“This weekend’s camp is taking place thanks to significant support from the SA Surfing Legends,” said De Kock.
