Local lifesavers in training from Umhlali Preparatory School travelled to Cape Town last week to compete in the SA lifesaving championships.
Between April 9 and 11, Umhlanga Rox Nippers Mary Kewley, Brigitte von Buddenbrock, James Kewley and Luca de Marigny took on young lifesavers representing 20 clubs from all over the country.
The nippers dominated the event, with great results across the board.
In the U9 long distance run, Brigitte von Buddenbrock charged into first place and took home the gold.
The U10 events was featured by a determined James Kewley, who secured silver medals in both the Taplin relay and mixed surf swim relay, while gaining fifth place in the mixed bodyboard and sixth in the male surf swim.
More fantastic results were achieved by Luca de Marigny in the U 11/12 age-group; earning bronze in the male beach sprints and silver in the mixed beach relay. Shane Maguire and Brayden Bergset were made Nippers of the tournament in the U14 and U12 age-groups, respectively.
Overall, Umhlanga Rox Nippers secured third place in the tournament; a truly fantastic accomplishment by all competitors and coaches at the North Coast’s premier lifesaving club.
