Dom off to Africa Games
Ballito gymnast will compete in aerobic gymnastics at international competition.
For the first time in history, aerobic gymnastics will be included at the 11th Africa Games in Brazzaville, Congo in September and Ballito’s Dominique Mann will be there ready to represent her country.
The South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC) has recently named the South African team to compete in 15 out of 22 sporting codes being contested at the games and Mann was included in SA’s gymnastics team.
She recently scooped gold at the national championships in Pretoria and defended her title as aerobic champion.
“I am so happy that I am going to the Games as national champion,” said Mann who will be ranked second at the Games.
“We usually have Africa Champs, but the All Africa Games are on a much bigger level with more people competing.”
Aerobic gymnastics have not been included in the Games before since it is considered a relatively new sport and a certain amount of countries need to participate in the sport before it can be included in the Olympic Games.
“We are waiting to hear if aerobic gymnastics will be included at the Olympics, that is why every result we get now is so important for us,” said Mann who is sponsored by Mr Price Sport competes in the individual, mixed pair and trio categories.
The happy champ said she is very excited to compete in the Africa Games.
“I am quite confident going into the competition, it will be important to nail every event from now on,” said Mann.
Team SA are the defending champions of the continent after ending at the top of the medals table in 2011.
