Soccer, rugby and netball champions crowned.

Muddy as it was on Saturday, the Nkobongo Sports ground was filled with hundreds of sport lovers from across the Ilembe region.

It was the department of sport and recreation district championship games with teams from Mandeni, Maphumulo, Ndwedwe and KwaDukuza competing.

The fans were thrilled by the superb games of rugby and soccer.

Maqumbi, Maphumulo was crowned as the district soccer champions after beating Nkobongo 4-3 on penalties.

The match was very entertaining with players giving their best performance when attacking and defending. It was no surprise when the match ended goalless.

Before the soccer final, was the clash of the rugby teams. The team from Deda, Ndwedwe nailed the Nkobongo team with a resounding score of 40 – 10.

For athletics, Siphokuhle Dlamini from Maqumbi, Maphumulo and Bongelani Zulu from Mandeni, Macambini took home the gold.

Nkobongo volleyball team took first position while the Macambini team claimed second.

Macambini went home with the shiny basketball championship trophy and the Nkobongo netball team won the netball championship.

Nkobongo councillor Themba Ntuli thanked all the teams and supporters for their good behavior and emphasised the importance of unity among communities in the region.

“Congratulations to the winners and all the best in the future. It all went well and fair,” said Ntuli.
