Habig burns rubber at nationals

Local petrol head will have to give it his all for a ticket to the World Champs.

Grade 11 pupil at Ashton International College and the 2015 KZN DD2 Karting Champion, Benjamin Habig had a good outing in the final leg of the 2015 SA National Championship which was held at Zwartkops Raceway, Gauteng last weekend, October 2 to 4.

Habig went into the second round race, which was held in Vereeniging, in 52nd position after missing the first round of the 2015 title race due to a rugby injury. He steadily climbed the championship ladder by winning every KZN Regional event and positioned in the top five at all the remaining nationals.

In the final of the very competitive DD2 class, boasting four former world champion titles, Habig finished third overall, which elevated him to fifth in the final SA Title standings for the year.

“I am happy with my final result, but obviously I do not qualify for the World Championship. My only chance now is to win the Africa Open, as the Africa Champion and the SA Champion qualify for the SA team,” said Habig, who is excited to get behind the steering wheel in the hopes of being crowned Africa’s best.

The Africa Open draws a big entry list from countries as far afield as Kenya, Zambia, Egypt, Namibia, Mozambique, as well as a large contingent from South Africa.

“It is very competitive, and everyone drives at 100% in this ‘all or nothing’ event,” said Habig, who hopes to come back with his ticket to the World Championship later in the year.
