Surf’s up at Willard Beach

Top local surfers shoot out at surfing club's contest.

The second event of the North Coast Boardriders surf contest series was held on Saturday, October 31 at Surfers, Willard Beach.

Once again the prime location served up favourable winds and highly contestable waves. Top surfers from the North Coast were in attendance which made for some high performance surfing across all the divisions.

In the U/16 division, Calvin Goor came up against fellow provincial team member Jamie Irvine, with Calvin showing great heat strategy and finding the better waves to take the honours.

The U/20 final was made up of the North Coast’s finest junior surfers as Shane Sykes, Richard Kidd, Calvin Goor and Seaton Swart took to the waves. Sykes used his international experience to once again come out on top with Richard Kidd close behind in second and Calvin Goor surfing well to make the finals in the older division and securing third place, with Seaton Swart in fourth.

The open men’s final was another close affair with some challenging conditions as the tide filled in. The lead changed hands often as the surfers jostled for position on high scoring waves. In the end Jaco Kapp managed to successfully defend his title with Janeck Ferrandi placed a close second and Byron Lindsay in third.

The North Coast Boardriders thanked their sponsors for their sponsors, Billabong, Dakine, Von Zipper, Groundswell Surf Shop and Coastal Tool Hire, for their continued support. The entry fees raised from the event will be donated to the Feline Feral Fund.
