Football star joins Uthongathi FC

Nomvethe retired last year while playing for Amazulu FC and Chili believes his experience will be a huge help for the Uthongathi FC players.

Retired football legend, Siyabonga Nomvethe is set to return to the field with the local soccer club, Uthongathi FC.

Club spokesperson Nkosinathi Chili said they are done with negotiations, all that is left is for Nomvethe to sign on the contract, which was expected to take place on Tuesday.

Nomvethe retired last year while playing for Amazulu FC and Chili believes his experience will be a huge help for the Uthongathi FC players.

The experienced soccer player has played for Orlando Pirates‚ Kaizer Chiefs and Moroka Swallows in South Africa and played for Italian clubs: Udinese‚ FC Empoli and Salernitana.

The 42-year-old striker also played for Djurgaden in Sweden and Aalborg BK in Denmark, where he won the Danish Championship with Aalborg in 2004 and 2005.

“We are in the second leg of the season and it is going to be a very difficult one and our young boys can surely use the motivation from Nomvethe,” said Chili.

Currently, Uthongathi FC is in the second position of the GladAfrica Championship with one point after Ajax Capetown, which they lost against last Saturday.

The game was played in Durban, Sugar Ray Xulu Stadium in Clermont, where they lost 3-1.

“I think fitness was the cause of our loss, our boys were not 100 percent fit which is understandable since it was our first game after the break. Although we are one point behind them (Ajax) as the club we take it as if we are four points behind, because they still have one game in hand. Which means we need to pull our socks up in the next coming games,” said Chili.

He said there are other players who are planning to sign to strengthen their squad, however, he was not in a position to disclose who they were because negotiations were still in the early stages.

“We are also going to release some players but we are very excited about the players we are going to sign and we hope they will be an advantage to our squad,” said Chili.
