Three local rugby coaches have been appointed to the Sharks management staff for provincial rugby weeks in 2026, a major milestone for local schools.

The announcement was made at the annual Sharks High School Rugby Association AGM, held at Kearsney College on November 1.

One coach from Ashton International College and two from Curro Salt Rock will take up key roles during the June/July holidays next year. The appointments were confirmed at the Greyhound in Botha’s Hill.

Curro Salt Rock’s head of sport, Shaun Blignaut, was named manager of the U17 AFGRI Week team travelling to Bethlehem, while head of rugby, Sifiso Shabangu, will manage the KZN U16XV Grant Khomo team, which will play at Kearsney College.

“This incredible recognition reflects their unwavering passion, strategic leadership and commitment to developing young athletes both on and off the field,” said Curro executive head, Samantha Smit.

“With Blignaut and Shabangu’s leadership, Curro is gaining the expertise and energy to push harder, play smarter and raise the bar even higher.”

Shabangu expressed pride in the achievement but emphasised the importance of representation.

“It is an honour to be part of the Sharks management team for 2026,” he said.

“This opportunity is not only a personal milestone, but also a meaningful moment for Tier 2 schools.

“Being represented among the best in the province shows the depth of talent, dedication and passion that exists beyond the traditional powerhouses. It is a privilege to carry that flag forward and contribute to a stronger, more inclusive rugby landscape.”

Ashton coach Siya ‘Bongs’ Mbanga has been appointed KZN U15 manager for the Rhino National Rugby Week and Sharks U17 Sevens manager.

“I am truly grateful to be part of both the Ashton College community and the Sharks Schools community – it is an incredible honour. I am privileged to contribute to our rugby family and I firmly believe that even greater things lie ahead,” said Mbanga.

“We are incredibly proud of coach Bongs and all he’s achieved and we support him every step of the way. His dedication and hard work are to be commended,” said Ashton spokesperson, Morgyn Prinsloo.
