10th Luthuli Walk draws hundreds to Groutville to commemorate Nobel laureate’s legacy
The walk is held each July to coincide with the anniversary of Chief Albert Luthuli's death on July 21, 1967.
Hundreds of people laced up their running shoes on Saturday morning for the 10th Luthuli Walk and Fun Run in Groutville.
Hosted by the Luthuli Museum, the annual event attracted participants of all ages to honour the legacy of Chief Albert Luthuli.

The walk is held each July to coincide with the anniversary of his death on July 21, 1967.
The race retraces the route he regularly walked from his home in Groutville to his shop and fields along the uMvoti River, allowing participants to symbolically follow in his footsteps while reflecting on his life and legacy.
Beyond promoting just physical activity, the event also celebrated the values of service, equality and unity for which Chief Albert Luthuli stood.

Among the participants was 76-year-old Groutville resident Jane Zungu, who took part in the walk for the first time.
She said she was overjoyed to have finally gathered the courage to participate and proudly completed the route without any assistance.

“I was a very young child when he passed away and I have been meaning to take part in this walk for a long time. This event means a lot to me and other senior citizens,” said Zungu.
