Stanger Brawlers bring home big volleyball title in Durban

Players held their nerve in some tight matches against club teams from across KwaZulu-Natal.

The Stanger Brawlers men’s over-30 volleyball team served, set and spiked their way to a provincial tournament victory in Durban last week.

Players held their nerve in some tight matches against club teams from across KwaZulu-Natal at the SAMVA Nationals at UKZN in Westville from Thursday to Sunday.

After making their way through the group stages, the Brawlers faced Pietermaritzburg’s Holmes Volleyball Club in a pulsating final.

The KwaDukuza men started well, claiming a comfortable first set in the best-of-three-sets format. It was much tighter in the second, however, and the teams found themselves tied at 20 points apiece, with the first to 21 taking the set. Up stepped Lungelo Mthunzi Mabaso, who scored the decisive point to seal overall victory for the team.

Six Brawlers players made the tournament dream team, while Mabaso earned Most Valuable Player honours. Dillon Devraj, Sherwin Daniel and Yuvi Ranjit were named Best Attacker, Best Setter and Best Defender, respectively.

The players thanked coach Dayalan Govender and team managers Denvar Pillay, Caitlin Pillay and Resham Sugreem for their support.

The Brawlers welcome men over the age of 30 who would like to join the club.
