On Saturday August 9 at 11:30 am, a sugarcane field was burnt. The smoke and fallout swept across Ballito in the strong winds causing the sunlight to appear golden. The smell from the smoke being blown down through the houses was terrible. It caused irritated red eyes and coughing. The mess that followed was the worst ever.
Now I ask the farmer responsible for this event, on a beautiful Saturday morning, to come forward and be fined and banned from ever burning his sugar cane again.
I have read the debates in the newspapers for and against sugarcane burning, and now I am definitely against it. How can this farmer be allowed to mess with the air we breathe?
Sugar is ruining our health in more ways than one. Smoking is banned in public places . . . this should be too!
