A select group of 14 North Coast locals were treated last week to a wine tasting in the intimate custom designed wine cellar at the home of Dunkirk residents Mike and Christa White.
Award winning wine maker from Beaumont Estate at Bot Rivier, Sebastian Beaumont gave a very informative presentation of a selection of his fine wines. Deserving special mention are the five star Hope Marguerite wooded Chenin Blanc and the 4.5 star Vitruvian, a Beaumont special blend of mourvedre, pinotage and shiraz which Beaumont prides as his signature wine.
Beaumont’s philosophy as a wine maker is that he makes the best wine he can each year from the unique harvest of that year, not trying to replicate a specific taste of the previous year.
The family run Beaumont Estate is steeped in history of early travellers trekking up the East Coast of the country, including a 200 year old watermill, lovingly restored by the family.
Guests at the Dunkirk winetasting were regaled with many an anecdote about the life of a wine maker in this quaint historic part of the Cape.
