“Be proud to be African”

African Fashion Week in London proved to be a success for Ekamu Brands creator.

“Europeans expect and want traditional African style from Africans.”

This is the lesson Nkanyiso Mngoma learned at the African Fashion Week in London.

Mngoma took part in the fashion show from August 6 to 8.

The 26-year-old, who is the director of Thembeni Printings and Ekamu Brands, said he was surprised by the excitement for his African designed products shown by the people of London.

“The African sandals made out of tyres and traditional attire were sold out and they were still asking for more. This made me realise that what we have as Africans is special and we can use it to make a living,” said Mngoma.

Mngoma said he will start making more African printed clothes and present them to suit the current style of clothing.

Since he got to taste the international market, Mngoma said he is working on getting his product into the stores overseas.

The passionate entrepreneur from Dorinkop was one of the 20 South African entrepreneurs under the KZN fashion council who exhibited at the show.
