Upcoming exhibition combines art, fashion and identity at Ballito Lifestyle Centre

"Taking Flight" will launch on June 4.

A new exhibition opening at The Gallery at Ballito Lifestyle Centre next month will explore themes of movement, displacement and belonging through art and fashion.

Titled Taking Flight, the exhibition officially launches on June 4 as part of the centre’s First Thursdays event and will run until August 2.

Inspired by the annual migration of barn swallows from Ballito to distant parts of the world, the exhibition draws parallels between natural migration and human movement. Curators say the exhibition encourages visitors to reflect on the reasons people move, whether for safety, opportunity, family or survival and the resilience often required to begin again.

Rather than focusing only on departure, Taking Flight explores the uncertainty, waiting and transition that shape many journeys. It also reflects on the idea of home as something carried through memory, identity and connection rather than simply a physical place.

The exhibition acknowledges organisations such as the Durban Refugee Centre, which supports individuals and families rebuilding their lives in KwaZulu-Natal.

Opening night will include a fashion showcase by emerging designer Esther under her label, The Esther Collection. The collection celebrates African creativity through bold colour and contemporary design.

“At its heart, Taking Flight is not a statement, but an invitation to reflect on the many ways movement shapes our lives and how we meet one another with greater openness,” said Gallery manager Sarah O’Reilly.

The Gallery at The Studios, Lifestyle Centre, Ballito, is open daily from 9am until 5pm.
