New address for Umhlanga Tourism

The previous premises wasn’t condusive to a successful tourism office that is easy to find.

UMHLANGA Tourism has a new home, and it’s at The Pearls shopping mall, at the information desk near The Village Table.

The move is something chairperson Jeannie Sarno says has been in the plans for a while now.

“The location that was being used in the past few years proved to be least favourable for an information office, let alone the Umhlanga Tourism Organisation,” said Sarno.

She said it had no visibility which made it difficult for members, residents and tourists to find.

“If residents couldn’t find us, imagine tourists trying to find us,” she added.

The move was meant to only be temporary while Durban Tourism could find another ideal location, but unfortunately, this took longer than anticipated.

“The staff and management at The Pearls Mall have been so welcoming, and their support has really given us the courage to thrive and believe that there are still good people out there willing to help,” she added.

“It’s very easy to find – you can park at the mall (Dischem), and we are on Level 3,” said Sarno.

She said the official structure has not been finalised as yet, but tourism needed to be back in the public eye immediately.

“As an organisation, we work non-stop to better publicise the Umhlanga Precinct, which is from the uMngeni River all the way north to the Tongaat River. It’s a huge area to cover, but we try our best even after hours as we have our own full-time jobs, too. Only Sabelo and Nonhlanhla are employed full-time with the tourism office, but the rest of the committee are all volunteers,” she said.

In 2024, members can look forward to a social media management workshop – free of charge.
